Q-Tuning by ear? Can it be done with an electronic tuner these days??
A- My training as a piano tuner involved mastering the skill of setting an equal temperament scale in the middle register then sensitively adjusting the rest of the piano to this scaling .I was trained the traditional way,using aural skills alone,and many hours of applied practice in setting the tuning pins to achieve a tuning that will last.
I believe a piano tuned solely with an electronic tuner poses problems as every piano is slightly different and has its own string scale geometry, so its just not a great tool to rely on,however fancy it is.I have used one on occasions but found them more of a distraction than a tool. Once trained ,the human ear is an incredibly accurate tool and the preferred way for arriving at the most musically pleasing result.
Q-How often should a piano be tuned to keep it in top shape ?
A- At least once or twice yearly, this way a piano can withstand small adjustments to pitch and keep relatively stable.Pianos in large rooms,halls, churches etc, often need tuning more than twice a year.
A piano’s pitch fluctuates with different seasons and climatic conditions.In time its pitch may drop quite considerably.To get the instrument back on correct pitch then larger adjustments need to be made and this causes instability. Sometimes the piano may move in pitch again soon after, needing subsequent tunings to settle down.
Q- Why and how do pianos go out of tune?
The soundboard and bridges swelling and contracting over time due to;
Seasonal humidity and temperature changes , Local factors ie overhead lighting, open doors, heat/air con sources.
Moving a piano especially into a different climatic environment.
Aging piano conditions ie Loose tuning pins, cracked soundboard/bridges.
New pianos tend to go out of tune a bit as the strings are settling, but they mostly settle down well after a few tunings.
Note-A piano with a cracked frame is un-tunable, so are pianos with numerous loose tuning pins.Pianos with cracked soundboards are also problematic in tuning stability and tonal clarity.
Q-What is the age of my piano?
A-Looking at the style of the cabinet gives a rough guide.heavy carved mouldings and legs Victorian-1890′s, Art Deco designs 1920s.Postwar pianos tend to be smaller and plainer..rounded edges 1950-1960′s,Squarer 1970 onwards
Serial number-this is usually stamped somewhere on the frame or inside of cabinet-Google piano serial numbers , or name of your piano,and usually get good info..
